| Martin proposed at 1:56pm yesterday afternoon at a fountain in front of the Lincoln Memorial at A.K. Smiley library. I was a beautiful day, a beautiful proposal, and the most perfect ring that wouldn't have even been as good if I had picked it out myself! The day started out with a walk to a diner for breakfast and then on the walk home, we went by the library. The Lincoln Memorial was open so we decided to go in since Martin had never seen it. On our way out, we signed the visitors log just for fun. Martin wanted to sit at a fountain just outside, so we sat and talked for a few minutes. "I love you, and I want to be with you forever." He said with a smile as he paused for a few seconds leaving me to wonder. "And that's why (gets down on one knee and pulls a box from his pocket) I want to ask you to marry me." I yelled "oh baby!" I fell to my knees in front of him with my arms around him. As I pulled away to look at him, he said "Melody Cherie Hansen, will you marry me?" and opened the box. I flung my arms around him again and we cried happy tears. The ring has been on my finger for 22 hours and it's still sinking in. I'm so happy and excited and... AAAH!!! After we composed ourselves we went back into the memorial and signed the book again, but this time in the comment section, we wrote "We just got engaged!" When we got to the Redlands Bowl, we stopped and talked a little more. I wanted to scream to the world that we were engaged. So, I did. :oP It probably echoed for at least a block. :) Don't be asking me when we're going to get married because we don't know yet. We just got engaged! (er der!) I will keep you all posted. | | |

| I haven't heard too much about the movie The Golden Compass, other than that Christians weren't touching it with a 10 foot pole. Philip Pullman, the author of the trilogy His Dark Materials, has not even tried to hide the fact that he is against Christianity. He is a well-known atheist and has written a series that has sold millions of copies. The most I had heard about the series was that 2 kids killed God at the end. In the movie, The Golden Compass, it only seems to cover the first book as it is completely left open at the end for the next book in the trilogy. I just watched it and observed how it all plays out. In the world of Lyra Belacqua (the young main character in the series), people's souls roam with them as demons in animal form. The Magisterium (the church) is the ultimate authority and all who disobey them may pay with their life, but it would be done in secret. There is dust (sin) that flows between the demons and the humans which is a gate to other worlds. The Magisterium is capturing children and separating their demons from them as a way to keep them innocent forever. If they grow up and their demons decide which animal form to take, dust (sin) enters their life and they will have bad thoughts and may choose to not do what they're told. This, I assume, is a play on God and him taking away our free will. The movie, and the books I'm sure, make the church seem like the enemy. This may be a threat to anyone who plays into Phil Pullman's BS, but for all who know the truth, it's nothing but another Harry Potter on the book shelf of fantasy and fairy tales. Don't get me wrong, I am not condoning this man's writing or religion, and by no means am I recommending his books. But I do encourage everyone to take it for what it is. Just another attempt to get another idea of Christianity out on the market through children's fiction. This seems to be more powerful because kids are more susceptible to believing just about anything. I say, don't just cut the kids off from everything you don't want them to see, read, or participate in. EXPLAIN to them why it's not good for them to fill their minds with that junk. Explain why you don't think they should do the things that are not good in your eyes. When they're young, teach them what is right and wrong. When they're a little older, let them make some decisions for themselves (to an extent, of course). And of course, when they are finally adults, all you can do is give them good advice and hope they'll follow it. You can't prevent them forever. You have to hope that your teachings will stick, and know that they will make mistakes. I think there are alot of ignorant Christians that just choose to know what they hear rather than check it out for themselves. I'd rather know what's out there and decide for myself. | | |
| Malachi 3:3 says: 'He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.'
This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God.
One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study.
That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining Silver.
As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.
The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse: 'He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver.'
She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time.
The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.
The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, 'How do you know when the silver is fully refined?'
He smiled at her and answered, 'Oh, that's easy -- when I see my image in it.'
If today you are feeling the heat of the fire , remember that God has his eye on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image in you.
